Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering for England

One A Level either in maths, physics, or engineering with a grade C or above, or a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Electrical & Electronic/ Mechanical/ General) with an MP grade or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering (Electrical & Electronic/ Mechanical/ General) with MPP grade or the international equivalent of the above (UK ENIC equivalent qualification).

Students with the Level 3 qualification in an engineering discipline with industrial experience may be considered.

You should have GCSEs grade 9 – 4 (grade C and above) in English, Maths and Science or equivalent, plus you will take a college test in maths and general science/engineering in case of non-availability of GCSE qualification.

All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS overall 6 and 5.5 in each band.

This one-year course is suitable for young/mature adults seeking to reskill/upskill in the engineering sector.

In this one-year course, students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector by studying level 4 units.

This course has 8 mandatory units out of which three are core units and the remaining five are specialist units. All units have a 15 credit value.

Core Units (Mandatory):

• Unit 4001: Engineering Maths
• Unit 4002: Engineering Design
• Unit 4004: Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)

Specialist Units (Mandatory):

• Unit 4006: Mechatronics
• Unit 4008: Mechanical Principles
• Unit 4014: Production Engineering for Manufacture
• Unit 4017: Digital Principles
• Unit 4020: Quality and Process Improvement

A mixture of theory by lectures/teaching (70%), practical demonstrations/workshops (25%), tutorials/virtual learning environments (3%), guest speakers and mini projects (2%) with 15 contact hours per week over 32 weeks during the academic year. Students are expected to complete approximately 90 hours per unit for each 15-credit unit of independent study (i.e. on research and completion of assignments) and unsupervised form of learning (e.g. e-learning, e-assessment, coursework, work-based learning, etc.).

Assessment is through a series of time-constrained written assignments that involve design projects, reports, practical, simulations, posters, logbooks and presentations and tests.

Students after completion of HNC course will be able to progress onto the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering at HRUC (Uxbridge College)/ West London Institute of Technology, with a view to completing a full degree programme at the university. Many professional bodies also recognise HNC for further professional study.
