Website Accessibility Statement for West London Institute of Technology

This accessibility statement applies to West London Institute of Technology's website: www.westlondoniot.ac.uk

This website is run by West London Institute of Technology, part of HRUC. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website and aim to meet a minimum of WCAG 2.2 AA compliance in line with the Web Accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.2) standards.

We have built our website to be accessible with common assistive technologies and different ways of using websites. This means that you can:

  • Navigate the menus and all interactive functionality without a mouse and using assistive technology such as a screen reader.
  • Increase the font size or zoom in on content.
  • Navigate a page using headings throughout our written content.
  • Navigate our websites with assistive technology via embedded landmarks and ARIA functionality.

To provide additional support to aid a more inclusive user experience we provide the Recite Me assistive technology tool. This Toolbar enables all website visitors to customise their experience through a range of options to suit their online accessibility and language needs. The Recite Me toolbar provides text-to-speech functionality, fully customisable styling features, reading aids and a translation tool with over 100 languages, including 65 text-to-speech voices and many other features.

How accessible is this website?

Whilst we have endeavoured to ensure the accessibility of our site, there are some known limitations. These are documented below, along with suggested workarounds, and/or our long-term strategy for addressing these limitations.

The following are some potential problems that we are working to improve:

  • Embedded video and audio players can sometimes be difficult to use with assistive technology.
  • PDFs and documents are not always accessible.
  • We aim to provide captions and/or transcripts with all our videos but that might not be available for older videos.
  • We do not provide audio descriptions for videos but aim to provide visual content in alternative formats where possible.
  • If you encounter any content that you cannot access, then please contact us and we will endeavour to provide you with an accessible alternative.

We make use of third-party resources such as audio and video players to embed content in our website. Wherever possible we will ensure these are conformant.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • WCAG 1.1.1 - Not all images have alternative text available. We have been working on adding alternative text to any new images published on the website.
  • WCAG 1.1.1. Non-text content - some PDFs and word documents are essential to providing our services, however some may not fully meet accessibility standards. We will continue to review existing PDFs and update content by January 2026 or publish new content as html web pages where possible.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • PDF content supplied by external parties that does not fully meet accessibility criteria. We will look to add website links where possible to ensure we can link to relevant and helpful information for our website users.
  • Invalid Aria Attributes: The embedded Google map and YouTube videos used on the website contain invalid aria attributes on some of their elements. This cannot be fixed without removing the map and YouTube videos.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We aim to audit our website every six months (using both automated and manual methods), via our third-party website agency (the last audit was completed on 30 September 2025) or the Recite Me Accessibility Checker, and resolve any conflicts that may arise from that.

We can conclude based on the testing that the website is partially accessible to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Audio and video

When videos are hosted on YouTube then automatic captions are available and we aim to improve these where possible. If you encounter a video without captions and need assistance accessing the content, then please get in contact and we will provide a transcript.

Documents

Downloadable documents and PDFs may not be fully accessible. We are working to ensure those in use are available in an accessible format.
