Food and Drink Skills Hub

Scroll down

The food and drink manufacturing sector in West London is undergoing major change, driven by exciting new technologies, regulations, and shifting consumer demands.

In response we have established a new West London Institute of Technology (WLIoT) Food and Drink Innovation and Skills Hub (launched in June 2025).

Spearheaded by Harrow, Richmond, and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC), and supported by leading Further Education (FE), Higher Education (HE) institutions, and key industry partners, our shared ambition is for the Hub to become a centre of excellence for skills development, innovation, and cross-sector partnership.

Our mission and impact

Deliver sector-specific, future-facing training and qualifications

Continuously review and update programmes to reflect the latest technological developments and market demands, ensuring that learners acquire cutting-edge, industry-relevant skills, including development of specialist apprenticeship programmes.

Foster strong ties between education and industry

Strengthen collaboration between education providers and industry to co-design curricula as well as provide work-based learning opportunities, and integrate emerging technologies into training.

Cultivate a diverse, adaptable talent pipeline

Create targeted pathways and outreach strategies to engage a wider demographic, including younger learners and adult career changers who may not have previously considered careers in the FDM sector.

Support lifelong learning and upskilling

Make training more accessible to a wide range of learners, including those already employed or seeking flexible options through a wide range of learning opportunities to re-skill or upskill.

Responding to a rapidly changing industry

To stay ahead, the industry must invest in talent development through modular learning, Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE), and expanded Apprenticeship programmes. By fostering collaboration between education and industry, we can build a skilled, innovative and diverse workforce able to make the most of the exciting range of careers available in this cutting-edge sector.

Investing in these programmes, employability skills, and careers will significantly contribute to the growth and success of this thriving industry in the region.
